Dutch—and Six Other New York Spots You’ll Want to Check Out This Spring
After his successful venture in rustic Italian cuisine at Locanda Verde, Andrew Carmellini decided to return to his American roots for his latest restaurant, The Dutch, which opens this week and promises not to bring just the standard apple pie and cheeseburger to your table. A mesh of cultures and international ingredients, the menu is Carmellini’s interpretation of what the term “American” means right now, especially in New York: a mixture of traditional (fried chicken) and inventive (barrio tripe, lamb neck mole). With the bar open until 2:00 a.m., there’s also a late-night menu for hungry revelers wandering through SoHo in the wee hours.
The space was designed by Roman and Williams and, true to its Americana theme, the main room features an oyster bar in the center, refined leather banquettes, and black-and-white New York–centric images surrounding the brick walls. And for those who perhaps desire a more elegant evening, through the zig-zagged hallway you will find the more upscale counterpart of the restaurant (although, be warned, you will need a reservation to make it to the back room). Yet the real exclusivity will lie in the downstairs abode of The Dutch. Details remain hazy as to exactly what that space will become, though it’s already been granted a name of its own: PS 131. A sub-cellar lounge, perhaps? While remaining coy, but not ruling it out, the response is: “Let’s just say it’s a private room for now.”
